Original job description

Staff Accountant | $60,000–$80,000 | Burlington, ON

The useful thing about working in a smaller CPA firm is that nobody has invented seventeen different departments to prevent you from seeing how the whole thing works.

You get broader exposure.

This Staff Accountant opportunity is with an established Burlington CPA firm where you’ll work across year-end accounting, tax and client files rather than being confined to one narrow area.

You’ll work closely with experienced accountants and Partners, deal directly with clients and gradually take greater ownership as your experience develops.

Why this role stands out:

$60,000–$80,000 salary
Burlington location
Broad accounting and tax exposure
Direct client interaction
Close access to senior accountants and Partners
Varied privately owned client base
Opportunity to develop technically
Clear progression toward Senior Accountant
Flexible working hours
Stable, established CPA firm

What you’ll be doing:

Prepare compilation engagements
Prepare year-end working paper files
Prepare corporate and personal tax returns
Assist with bookkeeping and adjusting entries where required
Prepare financial statements
Communicate directly with clients
Follow up on outstanding information
Support senior team members on larger files
Manage multiple client deadlines
Gradually take greater ownership of files as your experience develops

What they’re looking for:

Previous Canadian public accounting experience
Experience preparing year-end files
Corporate and personal tax exposure
Strong understanding of accounting fundamentals
Comfortable communicating with clients
Strong organizational skills
DT Max / Dr Tax experience would be particularly valuable
CaseWare, QuickBooks or similar software exposure
CPA studies underway or an interest in pursuing the designation would be an advantage

This is an in-office position in Burlington, although there is flexibility around working hours.

If you’d like to know more about this position, just hit the apply button and I’ll be in touch. If you’re only browsing the job boards and haven’t updated your resume yet, that’s not a problem. You can give me a call first. You’ll find my number on LinkedIn by searching for Jamie Egglenton at Distinct North America. Alternatively, send me a connection request or message on LinkedIn and we can take it from there.

If you’ve reviewed this advert and are unsure whether to apply because you don’t meet every requirement, we’d still encourage you to apply. We support the CPA firms we partner with in building diverse, inclusive and equitable workplaces. Even if this role isn’t the perfect fit, there’s a good chance we’ll have another opportunity that is.
